Sue thinks of herself as very lucky to have been given the chance to go to California and meet Bobby Flay in the Final Cook-off of Aetna’s Healthy Food Fight Cooking Contest in November 2010.
It all began with her looking at recipes on the food network web site and seeing an ad to enter the contest. She entered her recipe of Oven Roasted Vegetables on top of her homemade pasta. After about a month she got an e-mail saying that her recipe had been chosen to compete in cook-off at Kennett Square, Pa. during the Mushroom Festival.
She and her husband, Frank packed up all her stuff to cook for 5 judges. What fun she had making pasta for everyone to see! Not hearing anything for days, she thought that she had not won….but to her surprise, after about a week she got an e-mail with the words “CONGRATULATIONS” in the heading. She was blown away! After she stopped jumping up and down at around 10:00 pm, she realized that she was being flown to Los Angeles to compete in the final contest in which she would cook for Bobby Flay and 5 other judges.
Now she was getting nervous! It hasn’t sunk in yet that she will be going to Hollywood with the possibility of winning $10,000 in cooking equipment for the kitchen. Not only did she win the trip to LA but she won 2 nights hotel and some money to spend. WOW! Then…….she finds out that the rules are changing. She can’t make her pasta but will be given a list of ingredients that she must make a Thanksgiving themed entrée. This list was given to her 2 DAYS before her flight to LA. She scrambles looking for recipes and has her friends over for two night to taste her creations. She has FINALLY come up with something unique and tasty. Every Thanksgiving and Christmas it is her tradition to make a crepe with cheese in a soup. She decides to make it healthier and change the crepe into a mixture of whole wheat flour and white flour instead of just one type of flour. Next, she thought of vegetables so she sautés zucchini and yellow squash along with spinach and adds them to the crepe recipe. The final results were: Turkey and Spinach Crepe with Fresh Vegetables. She had taken the Turkey Breast and chopped it with the spinach and put it inside the crepe wrapping it like a cigar and putting it in a bowl. Then she takes her cooked zucchini and yellow squash and lays them on top of the crepes. The finishing touch is the very hot turkey broth just about half way on the crepe. All done! It looks great, it is healthy and it tastes great. What more could the judges want?
After the cook off, Sue found out that between all of the finalist in LA, her pasta dish that she did at Kennett Square had the highest rating of everyone! If you count all the contestants, her dish is better than over 400 contestants! Not bad huh? Even though she did not win the final in LA, she still considers herself a winner when it comes to pasta. She got the highest rating out of everyone with her Roasted Vegetables dish. You must try her famous dish! Everyone is talking about it!
